Categories of Insiders: Passive Insiders

The insider threat can come in many forms. The primary dichotomy is between passive and active insiders. We will first take a look at passive insiders.

Passive insider- an insider who may be willing to assist with an attack by passing information of performing minor acts.

Unwitting insider- a category of passive insider who is easily manipulated by others and can be recruited to pass sensitive information to a third party.

An unwitting insider has generally been socially engineered by a malicious party into unknowingly assisting in their plan.This is a psychological manipulation that can take many forms, including:

  • Pretexting;
  • Phishing;
  • Baiting; and
  • Tailgating;

These forms of social engineering will be discussed more thoroughly in the video.
