One method of waste management is direct disposal of spent nuclear fuel and other waste materials in a geological repository. This method has several advantages and disadvantages.

The US Department of Energy has built a facility called the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP)  to demonstrate that it is possible to safely dispose of trans-uranic waste containing plutonium if that waste has negligible heat-loading.  The following video will describe the WIPP project in more detail.
